Wow. As I write this, I have just arrived home from Atlanta where we have won our 20th game in a row. I am in disbelief. People have asked me how we have done it and I don't really have a good answer for them. 20 straight wins ties the record for the second longest winning streak in NBA history with the 1971 Milwaukee Bucks with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson. The all-time record for consecutive wins is 33 by the 1972 Los Angeles Lakers. I still can't believe that we are in this company. What is even more shocking is that we have gone 8-0 without Yao, who is out for the rest of the season with a broken foot. Losing Yao was a huge blow for us but I am proud of the way we have responded. (By the way, for those who believe that we are a better team without Yao, they are insane!!!!!) Players like Luis Scola, Chuck Hayes, Carl Landry, and Dikembe Mutombo have raised their level of play without our best player playing. I am proud of them. When Yao first was injured, the national media in the United States said that we had little chance to even make the playoffs. I am sorry I have not written in a few weeks. I have been extremely busy with the season and my family. I am here today to share with you some very special family news of my own. My wife, Heidi, and I are expecting our first baby! Heidi is due to deliver the baby June 9th, so we are half way done with the pregnancy. We are so excited. This is our first child and we have tried to have a baby for many years now. We are not going to find out if the baby will be a boy or a girl, we want to be surprised! There are so few surprises in life anymore, that we want this to be an extra special surprise. Both of our parents are so excited to be grandparents and are ready to spoil our baby like many grandparents do! People have asked me a lot if I want a boy or a girl. All I really care about is the health of my wife and my child. As long as both stay healthy, it does not matter to me if it is a boy or a girl. We know it will be very tiresome to become parents and that we will be sleep deprived and constantly tired, but we are both excited for the challenge ahead. People ask me what I do off the court. I tell them that I am a normal person. One of my hobbies is playing with and trying the latest electronic gadgets. I have always been fascinated by products that are developed to "make my life easier" HA! People are always disappointed that I don't have fancy cars like my teammates or fancy jewelry or clothes as my teammates. That is just not my style. I will spend my hard earned money on electric gadgets. I just love them! I recently became very lucky, because the official magazine of the NBA called HOOP Magazine wanted me to become the new tech editor for the magazine. Every month I try out the newest electronic gadgets and write a review about the product. What a fun job! Some of the gadgets are really crazy (and useless). I tried a product called the Headplay that is a visor with miniature televisions on the brim of the visor (see attached pictures). I looked like a total nerd when I wore the Headplay, but I don't mind being a nerd sometimes, hahaha! The best products that I reviewed were Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band, for my Playstation 3. November 29, 2007 The NBA season is so long that there are natural peaks and valleys that every player goes through. I am going through one of those valleys right now. I just can't seem to find my rhythm and make any shots. I am shooting a career low 38% from the field. I have always prided myself on being an efficient player and I always expect myself to shoot a high percentage. I always say, "I don't take a lot of shots, but I make the shots I take count!" hahaha. I know that shooting slumps are part of the game. The most important thing that I must do is stay positive and continue to work hard on my shooting. I am a very routine oriented player. I do the same pre-game shooting drills every game. I start my warm-up with left and right handed hooks. I must make 10 hook shots in the post with both my left and right hands on both sides of the court. After my hook shots, I must make 20 shots from 15 feet from the corners and the free throw line. After those 80 makes, I must make 50 three point shots. After the three point shots, I must make 20 free throws. I do this routine every day whether it is a practice day or a game day. It was a tough week for the Rockets. After narrowly beating the Bobcats in Charlotte last Sunday, we have lost four games in a row. It did not help that Tracy McGrady hurt his elbow when we were playing the Lakers, but we feel we have good players and should still win these games. The NBA season is so long. Every team, even the best teams, go through rough stretches where you may lose a few games in a row and not play your best. The difference between the top teams and the lesser teams in the league is that the better teams never lose sight of the larger goal of improvement and team development, while the lesser teams begin to bicker, point fingers and assess blame. I think that we have a very resilient team and I hope we will stay together as a team and work to improve the things that we have not done very well. It is still very early in the season and we have had an unusually tough schedule thus far. Our team needs to stay the course and have faith in the plan. My trips to Los Angeles are, if nothing else, always exciting. First of all, I have to guard Kobe Bryant, who is arguably the best in the game. People always ask me why Kobe is so good and I always tell them that while he is extremely skilled, he is the most mentally strong and competitive player in the league. He is never satisfied, especially when he is scoring points. If he has 30 points, then he wants 40. If he has 40, he wants to score 50. It takes a great deal of mental discipline to guard Kobe. Last night, he scored 45 points. And while most people would look at that and said that we did a poor job defending him, I think we did a pretty good job. He shot the ball 32 times and shot 27 free throws. That is a lot of shots. My goal as a defender is to try to make my offensive player take as many shots as points he scores. So if my man scores 30 points but takes 30 shots, that is excellent defense. I don't g et caught up in how many points that I allow, I only focus on the efficiency. We played an inconsistent game. A new competition has started in the Rockets locker room: Who has the best Chinese brand basketball shoes? While I wear PEAK (still by far the best!), Chuck Hayes wears Li Ning and Steve Francis and Luis Scola have started to wear Anta. Yao just laughs at all of us when we argue amongst each other about who has the best shoes. Maybe it's because I am biased, but I just think my PEAK shoes look and feel better than the others, ha! It is amazing that so many players on our team wear Chinese branded basketball shoes. Players from other teams are always very interested in the Chinese shoes that we wear because no one in America has seen these shoes before. I like to joke with Scola and Hayes that they have a lot of work to do to catch up to PEAK, because my commercial is on television so many times a day. Of course they don't believe me, but when I was on my China tour this summer, I must have seen my commercial at least 30 times in one week! I laugh every time I saw my commercial because it made me look like a tough guy, but all my friends know that I am just a goofball! Ha! After two weeks of training camp, it is obvious that this year's Rockets team is much different from last year's. Last year we were a great defensive team that played at a slower pace. This year, we are a very up-tempo team. When you cheer for the Rockets this year, you will find our new style of play very exciting. If you are a fan of the NBA, you probably remember the Sacramento Kings from a few years ago. They were a great team that ran Coach Adelman's offensive philosophy very efficiently. It is very exciting for our team because we have so many smart offensive players. TMac is obviously a gifted passer, but I think that Yao is a very underrated passer. He will be put into situations this year where he will be a great playmaker for us. The key for our team will be to remember the defensive principles from last year and add them to the new exciting offense. You must have balance in the NBA to be successful.
